Six factors, weighted equally:
- Conversation quality — does it sound like a person, or like a chatbot performing warmth? We watch specifically for repetition, which is the most common failure.
- Memory — not just facts recalled, but whether they resurface naturally without prompting.
- Voice — latency, naturalness, and whether calls are usable hands-free or just a novelty.
- Customization — how much of the personality you actually control versus pick from a menu.
- Free tier and value — what you can genuinely do without paying, and whether the subscription earns its keep.
- Privacy — what is collected, whether chats train the model, and how hard it is to delete everything.
We deliberately avoid quoting exact prices and message limits, because they change constantly and stale numbers are worse than none. Where money matters we describe it qualitatively and point you at the app’s current pricing page.

2. Kindroid — best for memory and customization
Kindroid is the app for people who want to build something rather than be handed something. Its backstory system lets you write facts that persist rather than hoping the model picks them up from conversation, and in our testing it recalled details across long stretches more reliably than anything else we tried. Conversations stay in character over long sessions, which is where most apps quietly fall apart.
The cost is effort. The first ten minutes ask real work of you, and the free experience is thin enough that you will want a paid plan to see what the app actually does. 3. Character.AI — best for variety
Character.AI is a different proposition: instead of one companion you deepen over months, you get an enormous community-built library to sample. For exploring the category — working out which kinds of conversation you actually enjoy — it is the cheapest and fastest way in, and the free tier is one of the most generous around.

4. Nomi — best for group chats
Nomi does one thing nothing else does properly: it lets several companions share a conversation, each holding their own memories and opinions — including about each other. A scene with two of them can go somewhere you did not plan, which is a genuinely different experience from any one-to-one app.
